  • The HCD approach has been a core guidance in our desire to improve the access of users to abortion self-care in Colombia. This methodology taught us about the need to recognise the limits of what we think it’s a great idea when it’s not based on real people’s needs. Carrying out a hole research to identify the main barriers and opportunities through interviews with Mia (telemedicine platform) users was a very good practice to better craft our protoype facilitating the access to information and quality services that can fill gaps of timely inclusive access, in conditions of dignity and quality for everyone.

  • PPAT would like to create a telemedicine service system that meets the exact needs of users. Therefore, we referred to the concept of designing and creating a new era of work based on the client’s self-determination which is called a Human-Centered Design (HCD). This concept focuses on solving problems from the client’s perspective and real human needs. PPAT started with conducting quantitative and qualitative research studies. For the quantitative study, we collected 100 samples of clients who received abortion services at PPAT clinics. For the qualitative study, we organized in-depth interviews with 10 purposely selected clients who gave consent to participate in the research. We also organized 2 co-creation sessions with internal stakeholders. Then, we developed a prototype and asked for validation by our clients and stakeholders: Ipas and Women on Web. We have learned a lot from the process and it has provided strong foundation and evidence for further development and implementation of our project.

  • HCD is a powerful framework for finding innovative, user-driven solutions to complex problems by incorporating input and feedback from users in all steps of the process. It aims to make systems usable and useful by focusing on the users, their needs and requirements. It relies heavily on user participation and user feedback in the planning, implementation, and evaluating processes. This approach enhances effectiveness and efficiency, improves user well-being, user satisfaction, accessibility, and sustainability.

There are many benefits to applying a HCD methodology to reproductive health, including abortion care. It is especially important to consider and obtain feedback from users when developing and implementing models to support access to abortion services to ensure their needs are being met.
